About Us

Founded in 1911, LMU is a premier Catholic university rooted in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions. Our enrollment includes 6,087 undergraduate, 2,220 graduate and 1,236 law school students. Our 142-acre bluff-top campus is located in West Los Angeles and is among the nation's most beautiful and green campuses.

Loyola Marymount University offers rigorous undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to academically ambitious students committed to lives of meaning and purpose. We benefit from our location in Los Angeles, a dynamic city that brings into sharp focus the issues of our time and provides an ideal context for study, research,  creative work, and active engagement. By intention and philosophy, we invite men and women diverse in talents, interests, and cultural backgrounds to enrich our educational community and advance our mission:

  • The encouragement of learning
  • The education of the whole person
  • The service of faith and the promotion of justice

The University is institutionally committed to Roman Catholicism and takes its fundamental inspiration from the combined heritage of the Jesuits, the Marymount Sisters, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.  This Catholic identity and religious heritage distinguish LMU from other universities and provide touchstones for understanding our threefold mission

Diversity

Loyola Marymount University is committed to diversity in all its many forms. Diversity adds immeasurable value to an LMU education both inside and outside the classroom. Diversity is not an end in itself. Being exposed to other cultures and beliefs creates a fresh understanding of our society and ourselves. Hearing other voices fosters debate. LMU is a place where we are free to say what we think and where we also listen to others. Through speaking and listening, we probe diversity, work through its challenges and reveal the richness of its promise.

Excellence in academics is impossible if an education is exclusive or offered only to the privileged. We are building a diverse student body because it reflects the global community in which we live and work and because it is the right thing to do to fully educate our students for the future.

Diversity in our student body is not easily accomplished. There are many barriers to getting to college. LMU has undertaken several programs to seek out and encourage applications from disadvantaged students, to provide scholarships for those with need and to ensure that all admitted students get the support necessary for success at LMU and beyond.

Diversity in hiring of faculty and staff is also a challenge we meet head on. We have created programs to foster recruitment, hiring and retention of minority and women professionals in the faculty and on our staff.

With this in mind, we established the Intercultural Committee. It created a framework for embracing diversity and reflecting it in how we live our mission. The framework provides the definition, vision and goals to guide each of us as we work, study and learn together. It reflects our commitment and responsibility to foster, safeguard and work hard to retain diversity in all its forms.

Vision

As the Jesuit university in Los Angeles, LMU delivers a nearly 500-year-old tradition of excellence in transformative education in one of the world’s great and dynamic cities at the dawn of a new millennium.

This convergence of tradition, time and place offers unique opportunities to engage the most pressing issues facing our city and the world at large, and presents profound potential for significant and transformative learning.  LMU will capitalize on these opportunities.  We will engage students in the complex and rapidly changing world beyond the campus, involve students in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences, and foster collaborations between faculty and students.

Our rich array of educational opportunities will attract a diverse pool of students who embrace the mission of the University and possess the academic potential and personal attributes necessary to participate in a rigorous and rewarding academic experience.  The vibrant intellectual climate and commitment to the teacher-scholar model will attract and nurture an accomplished and diverse faculty and staff that will further enhance the academic excellence of LMU.

Through immersion in undergraduate and graduate programs that are academically challenging, innovative and ethically focused, our graduates will leave LMU with the confidence and capabilities to compete with alumni of the world’s top universities.  Our graduates also will possess a broad definition of success.  Because of their deep understanding of the integration of reason, faith and justice, our graduates will become men and women for others, prepared to make a positive impact on the global community.

In addition to great strength in traditional academic disciplines, LMU will be known for nationally prominent interdisciplinary centers and graduate programs that promote research and study in areas of great social relevance, both locally and globally.

A premier university remains dynamic, ensuring the highest quality and currency of its programs and continuously striving to improve.  At the beginning of its second century, LMU will sharpen its focus on excellence and expand public awareness of its successes.  Through strategic prioritization of resources, innovative collaboration and high standards of operational excellence, we will be poised to address the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
