Job Summary:
The Office of the General Counsel (âœOGCâ) offers a two-year, full-time, non-renewable legal fellowship, commencing on or about September 2022. This position is intended to be in-person and will be located in DuBourg Hall.
The William R. Kauffman Legal Fellowship Program provides a recent law graduate or an early career attorney with fewer than two years of practice experience, with an exciting opportunity to develop litigation, transactional, and client counseling skills within the context of higher education. The Legal Fellow will be exposed to many aspects of the Office of Counsels work, including but not limited to: employment, student affairs, athletics, research, transactions, charitable giving, litigation, and international collaborations.
The Kauffman Fellowship is named for Saint Louis Universitys esteemed former Vice President and General Counsel, William R. Kauffman, who announced his retirement from that position in 2021 after more than twenty-six years of service to the University and continues to serve as Senior Counsel and Secretary to the University.
Job Duties:
Under the direction of OGC attorney(s), the Legal Fellow will:
- Provide proactive assistance, research, and advice on various legal issues such as contracts, dispute resolution, regulatory compliance, research misconduct, employment-related issues and proceedings, data security and privacy, trademark, intellectual property, corporate governance, and litigation-related matters.
- Assist university counsel in responding to federal administrative charges, including but not limited to complaints before the Department of Educations Office for Civil Rights and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
- Conduct internal investigations under the direction and supervision of university counsel.
- Draft/review contracts, agreements and other legal documents.
- Advise on employment disputes and proceedings and assisting on a broad range of student affairs matters.
- Assist with litigation matters.
- Conduct training on federal and state laws and University policies.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

- General knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of applications and other software programs to develop presentations and work product in a variety of formats to meet client expectations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Licensure: Applicant must have received a J.D. within the past three years and have a license to practice law or plan to sit for a state bar exam the summer before commencement of the Fellowship.
