The Frank J. Remington Center is a University of Wisconsin Law School clinical center that houses six clinics providing legal services primarily for people incarcerated in Wisconsin state prisons. We have an opening for a new clinical faculty member and are seeking applicants for a clinical assistant/associate/full professor position. In all our clinics, we provide a dynamic, engaging learning opportunity for students, while meeting the legal needs of incarcerated persons.

The Remington Center clinics provide students with unique opportunities for client service, legal practice, non-litigation advocacy, and deeper reflection on issues related to the criminal legal system.

The clinical faculty member will teach existing or new clinical courses centered around direct representation of incarcerated people and work with law students in one or more of the following fields:

-Post-conviction Law: including sentence modification, parole assistance, and other matters relating to an incarcerated person's conviction or sentence;

-Re-entry: including debt/bankruptcy, immigration, SSI/SSDI, veterans' benefits, and other non-criminal matters impacting an individual's ability to successfully re-enter the community;

-Family Law: including paternity, divorce, child custody/visitation, child support, and other assistance to the family;

-Health Care: including advanced directives, powers of attorney, and other healthcare planning (excluding matters related to institutional healthcare).

We are also open to a proposal for a new clinical course related to these areas.

Work full-time in the Remington Center as a clinical assistant/associate/full professor. Primary responsibilities will be to instruct and supervise law students who will provide direct assistance and representation in the selected field(s). Faculty will:

a) Develop and teach a weekly clinical seminar for students
b) Oversee law students engaged in legal practice, including holding weekly supervision meetings
c) Be available to students for consultation and advice during the workday
d) Provide periodic oral and written evaluation of students
e) Review, edit, and approve all letters, pleadings, and documents prepared by students
f) Visit institution(s) as necessary to supervise student interviews of incarcerated persons; conduct screening interviews as needed
g) Conduct factual investigations, as needed, to assess and develop cases
h) Make court appearances as needed for cases
i) Engage in curriculum development, policy reform efforts, and scholarly research and writing on issues arising out of the work of the clinics
j) Attend regular staff meetings
k) Comply with grant and other reporting requirements
I) Complete other clinic-related tasks as assigned by the Frank J. Remington Center Director.

Required
Terminal Degree
JD or equivalent law degree.

Minimum three years of prior experience in relevant legal field required.

Priority given to those with:
- At least five years of legal experience in the relevant field
- Prior practice experience working with incarcerated or system-impacted clients
- Prior experience or interest in clinical law teaching
- A demonstrated interest in policy advocacy, legal scholarship, and/or other legal service to the community

Both entry-level and experienced clinicians are highly encouraged to apply. Hiring rank and salary will be based on experience and qualifications.

Admission to practice law is Wisconsin or ability to become admitted to the Wisconsin Bar by the position start date is required. On or around, September 1, 2024.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
