Directly manage to conclusion all reported and outstanding claims and incidents in all areas of operation, and oversee management of worker's compensation claims. Analyze each newly reported claim to determine if it should be self-handled, assigned to outside counsel, reported to the insurance company or transferred to another entity. Interact and conduct claims meetings with senior members of NYU, NYU Langone, legal counsel, insurance brokers, attorneys, third-party claim administrators and claimants for investigations. Negotiate and settle insured and/or self-handled claims. Manage the University Claims group which includes University Workers Compensation cases as well as University and NYU Langone Health Property, Casualty & Employment Practice Liability cases.
Responsibilities
Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
Preferred Education: Juris Doctorate (J.D.) J.D. or other legal training. Insurance-related professional development coursework or other certifications.
Required Experience: 10+ years progressively responsible professional level experience with workers' compensation claims; liability, property, and auto claims; underwriting and general risk management; and contract review, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Experience: 15+ years progressively responsible professional level experience with workers' compensation claims; liability, property, and auto claims; underwriting and general risk management; and contract review, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of New York State workers' compensation laws and claims handling procedures. Skilled negotiator experienced in handling self-insured claims, negotiating settlements directly with claimants and working with panel and non-panel defense attorneys and third party administrators. Deep understanding of the US legal systems and claims treatment as well as case law. Superior written and verbal communications skills. Strong analytical and organizational skills, to that point that full graphical representation of claims trends can be summarized in a high quality report for University Executive Leadership, independently and with short notice. Must be well versed in quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data in NYU systems and be able to strictly follow data privacy and security procedures for data handling and analysis to ensure adherence to legal and institutional standards. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Background in insurance claims, experience at an insurance provider and direct participation in legal proceedings for insurance claims cases as part of the attorney team or commercial parties attached to the case.
Qualifications
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $135,000.00 to USD $175,000.00. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
