POSITION DETAILS
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at The City University of New York (CUNY) serves as the system-wide resource for legal advice and representation. OGC supports CUNY???s mission to advance education by providing expert, timely, and relevant legal counsel, guidance and advocacy. OGC advises the Board of Trustees, the University???s central administration and its 25 constituent colleges, impacting all operational areas of the University and its campuses.
OGC is seeking a skilled and dependable Legal Specialist to provide confidential legal and administrative support to attorneys within the office. This role includes supporting vital office operations and assisting attorneys with legal research and case preparation.
Reporting to the General Counsel or their designee(s), the Legal Specialist will perform comprehensive, confidential and time-sensitive duties and assignments critical to the division???s effectiveness. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to a dynamic legal team in a diverse academic environment.
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview information, other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
Research and draft standard legal documents, pleadings, discovery responses, and affidavits.
Convey routine legal information related to contractual or legal matters, and communicate with other University departments as necessary.
Assist attorneys with preparing routine legal opinions, edit policies and procedures, and prepare contracts and settlement agreements.
Manage attorney calendars and coordinate virtual and in-person meeting and event logistics, and maintain confidential files and documents.
Assist with designing, preparing, and updating OGC documents, including proofreading documents for accuracy, completeness, and conformity to established formats.
NOTES:
Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
This position is excluded from union representation in the collective bargaining unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required.
Preferred:
Four years of legal assistant experience in a college, in-house legal department, law firm, government agency, or non-profit organization.
Strong knowledge of legal contracts, agreements, and settlement procedures and documentation.
Familiarity with current and developing legal issues and trends in higher education or public service.
Accurate, detail and solution-oriented with strong legal research, writing, analytical and problem-solving skills.
A proactive, flexible, and collaborative work style with strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills to foster successful relationships across diverse constituents to include College campuses, University staff, as well as external constituents.
A strong commitment to public service and professional integrity, with the ability to handle sensitive information, perform confidential assignments, exercise sound judgement, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Strong proficiency using online legal research tools, Microsoft Office Suite, databases, programs, virtual meeting/conferencing software, and collaboration tools.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range is $54,313 - $68,004 , commensurate with credentials, education, and experience.
