The University of Minnesota Law School is seeking applicants who are recent law graduates for a fellowship position with the Gun Violence Prevention Law Clinic (GVP Clinic). The fellowship will begin in summer 2025 and is anticipated to be a one-year commitment contingent on grant funding. The position requires on-site physical presence at the GVP Clinic, but also allows for a portion of the work to be done remotely.
The Gun Violence Prevention Fellow position at the University of Minnesota Law School is designed for recent law graduates interested in gaining practical experience in clinical teaching and constitutional litigation through direct client representation and academic clinical work. The Fellow will work under the mentorship of the Gun Violence Prevention Clinic director and will report to the director, working on cases defending Minnesota gun laws against constitutional challenges and supporting affirmative litigation to prevent gun violence. This one-year fellowship, starting in summer 2025, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful litigation and legal student education while developing professional skills in a supportive environment. The GVP Clinic is housed within the Legal Clinics at the University of Minnesota Law School. The Law School currently offers over twenty-five clinical courses with a broad diversity of subject matters. The Law School is committed to providing national leadership in clinical education and to ensure that students are prepared for the increasing complexities of legal practice in a diverse community.
The majority of the work is in-person with some remote flexibility.
Appointment: This is a 100% time, non-renewable, 12-month academic professional appointment. The initial appointment will be for one year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide direct legal representation in affirmative and defensive litigation to advance the goals of gun violence prevention. (20%)
Serve as a Special Assistant Attorney General and litigate cases on behalf of the state of Minnesota. (10%)
Assist in supervising law students providing legal representation. (20%)
Provide guidance and feedback to students. (20%)
Coordinate with partners in the gun violence prevention field about special projects. (10%)
Assist with teaching clinic seminar sessions. (10%)
Publish practitioner-oriented or scholarly articles. (10%)
Required Qualifications:
J.D. degree from an A.B.A. accredited law school.
Applicants must be licensed to practice law in at least one state (whether Minnesota or another state).
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of developing Second Amendment jurisprudence from the U.S. Supreme Court and lower courts.
Prior experience working or volunteering to support the gun violence prevention movement.
Strong prior clinical experience.
Prior experience supervising or teaching law students.
