DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel (OGC) provides legal services on the University's behalf. We report jointly to the Board of Regents and the president.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position provides paralegal support in the area of labor & employment and provides support to other UC Legal staff. The hire will possess a strong foundation of knowledge in the overall paralegal field, with some specialized experience in labor & employment and litigation. By working independently, the Paralegal will provide document review and document production in response to subpoenas and PRA requests, conduct legal research, monitor regulatory organizations and draft documents such as templates for legal arguments, position statements and research summaries. The hire will administer databases and internal sites that contain materials such as mediation briefs and campus specific resources. The position requires attention to detail and effective time management. The Paralegal will conduct research on projects, as directed by attorneys. The hire will act as a liaison with internal clients, outside counsel and external organizations and may manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes and resources. The hired candidate will thrive in a collaborative work environment, while functioning with autonomy. Responsibilities
40% Coordinate, analyze and assist counsel with responding to claims arising at the UC campuses and medical centers, including developing case strategy and strategies related to document collection and storage in coordination with in-house and outside counsel. Perform document reviews to aid in responding to subpoenas, discovery requests and California Public Records Act requests. Review documents for applicable privileges. Identify, preserve, collect and process documents utilizing key-term (Boolean) searches. Produce electronically stored information ('ESI') and paper documents utilizing eDiscovery software, such as Logikcull and/or Relativity platforms.
20% Draft templates, including legal arguments, in response to claims made by unions as well as first versions of position statements for counsel review. Provide case summaries, research memoranda and analyses to clients, outside counsel and OGC attorneys.
20% Conduct legal research of federal and state law, as well as administrative case law, including decisions by the Public Employment Relations Board.
20% Administer internal site (SharePoint) for Labor & Employment specific resources, including materials such as mediation briefs, assignment sheets and resources for campus-specific bargaining units with links to each campus' assigned OGC attorney. Administer and update the mediation brief bank. Monitor the Public Employment Relations Board website and provide updates to counsel.
Requirements
Minimum of 4 years of relevant working experience required.
Required Qualifications
Strong analytical / problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff; both verbally and in writing.
Strong document and project management and data organization skills.
Strong skills in research (Westlaw and/or Lexis Nexis) and analyzing / synthesizing large amounts of data.
Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of computer application programs such as Relativity and/or Logikcull.
Working knowledge of UC processes, protocols and procedures.
In-depth knowledge in one or more legal practice areas.
Education
Associate degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training required.
Licenses and Certifications
Paralegal certification preferred.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
The person hired will be required to reside within California and report to work on-site at UC's Office of the President (UCOP) located in Oakland, CA on a regular basis. Current policy requires that a new employee work on-site at least two days a week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays ('anchor days'). In exceptional circumstances, approved by the General Counsel, candidates residing in or willing to relocate to California may be considered for a fully remote work arrangement.
The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications as well as other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
