The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at The City University of New York (CUNY) is the system wide resource for legal advice and representation. The OGC assists CUNY???s decision makers in advancing the University???s educational mission by providing expert, relevant and timely legal advice, guidance, and advocacy. The OGC provides legal assistance and advice to the Board of Trustees, the University???s central administration and its 25 constituent colleges, and its services touch all operational areas of the University and its campuses. The Office seeks a skilled and dependable Legal Coordinator to provide confidential work supporting attorneys within OGC and administrative duties supporting crucial office operating functions. The Legal Coordinator assists CUNY attorneys with time sensitive legal, regulatory and compliance matters affecting the University and its colleges.
Reporting to the General Counsel, or their executive designees, the Legal Coordinator will perform a variety of comprehensive confidential and time-sensitive analytical and administrative duties and assignments for the effective functioning of the division. Moreover, the Legal Coordinator will work closely with the attorneys to research and analyze evidence and factual data for internal hearings and meetings.
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview information, other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
Research and draft standard legal documents, pleadings, discovery responses and affidavits
Convey routine legal information about legal or contractual issues or transactions; and communicate with other University departments on legal matters
Assist attorneys with preparing standard legal opinions and position statements; edit policies and procedures; and prepare standard contracts and settlement agreements.
Manage attorney calendars, and coordinate virtual and in-person meeting and event logistics; maintain documents, and confidential files.
Assist with designing, preparing, and updating the OGC documents; proofread documents for accuracy, completeness, and conformity to established formats.
NOTES: Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work on-site in the office. This position is excluded from from union representation in the collective bargaining unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM
Bachelor's degree required.
PREFERRED
Two years of law office, higher education legal experience and coursework preferred
Knowledge of legal contract, agreement and settlement procedures and documentation
Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends in area of expertise
Accurate, detail and solution-oriented with strong legal research, writing, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proactive, flexible and collaborative work style with strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills to foster successful relationships with diverse campus and University staff, as well as external constituents.
Commitment to public service, service excellence and professional integrity to manage sensitive information, perform confidential work and exercise sound judgement with ability to thrive in a demanding time-sensitive office.
Computer proficiency using online legal research, and administrative, systems, databases, and programs, plus Microsoft Office programs, and virtual meeting/conferencing and collaboration tools.
