GONZAGAUNIVERSITYSCHOOL OF LAW, in Spokane, WA invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track or tenured position as Associate or Full Professor to primarily teach immigration-related courses and to direct the Beatriz and Ed Schweitzer Border Justice Initiative beginning Fall 2024. The Initiative's mission is to inspire and equip students to be skilled, ethical, and compassionate immigration law and policy advocates through hands-on work with immigrant families and their advocates. The Initiative serves economically and socially marginalized immigrants and mobilizes their integration through free immigration law services, by informing the public on immigration law and policy, and by leveraging resources through collaboration. The Directorship is for an initial term of two years, with the possibility of renewal, based on performance and mutual agreement, each year thereafter. The Directorship is on a separate twelve-month contract and comes with a stipend.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to be an outstanding teacher, a commitment to service, and excellent scholarly potential, particularly in alignment with Gonzaga Law's Center for Civil & Human Rights, within which the Beatriz and Ed Schweitzer Border Justice Initiative is situated. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to direct the Initiative's work, including but not limited to supervising and collaborating with the Immigration Clinic staff attorney, creating and fostering partnerships with advocacy organizations, planning and teaching an asylum practicum annually, mentoring students, and additional administrative tasks.
Full-time Professors, regardless of rank, will typically teach two courses per semester, which may include first-year and/or required courses. The candidate selected for this position will primarily teach immigration-related courses but may also teach other courses, depending on expertise, interest, and need. Gonzaga Law embraces a unified faculty model, in which all faculty members are supported as scholars in all subject matter areas and have the opportunity to teach doctrinal, experiential, clinical, academic support, or bar preparation courses if desired. Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications for Associate and Full Professor ranks and Initiative Director role:
Juris Doctor or equivalent degree earned from an ABA-accredited law school or its equivalent;
At least one year of experience practicing immigration law;
Active law licensure in a state bar of the United States, and the ability and interest to become actively licensed to practice law in Washington state;
Demonstrated record of academic achievement;
Superior recommendations;
Meaningful supervisory or people-management record;
A passion for building ties in the community and for establishing and maintaining relationships with collaborative partners; and
The ability to supervise and mentor students working on emotionally charged immigration matters.

Additional minimum qualifications for Associate Professor:
Authorship of a minimum of two substantial scholarly writings that have been either published or accepted for publication;
Demonstrated record of excellent teaching, including at least five years of teaching at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor; and
Demonstrated record of professional development activities, which may include, but is not limited to, engaging with other professionals in the development of the law or the legal profession; service to the legal profession, including working with judges and practicing lawyers to improve the profession; and service to the public, including participation in pro bono activities.
Additional minimum qualifications for Full Professor:
Authorship of a minimum of two substantial scholarly writings that have been either published or accepted for publication, after attaining the rank of Associate Professor;
Demonstrated record of excellent teaching, including at least five years of teaching at the rank of Associate Professor; and
Demonstrated record of professional development activities, which may include, but is not limited to, engaging with other professionals in the development of the law or the legal profession; service to the legal profession, including working with judges and practicing lawyers to improve the profession; and service to the public, including participation in pro bono activities.
