Job Description Summary | The University Detective Lieutenant will be responsible for the Investigative Division of the Department of Public Safety and Police Services and for further investigation of all felonies, misdemeanors that require extended investigation, and other investigations that are sensitive in nature. |
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) | 1. Collaborates on investigations with members of the Department of Public Safety and Police Services as well as outside agencies. 2. Investigates all assigned cases; questions witnesses, victims, and suspects to determine factual material and provide evidence of leads. 3. Participates in court activities; prepares cases for prosecution; meets with state/county attorneys to discuss prosecution of cases; testifies in judicial proceedings 4. Directs activities at crime scenes to ensure that victims are assisted, the crime scene is processed/secured, and all evidence is properly gathered and preserved. 5. Oversees the department’s Special Victims Unit (SVU). 6. Reviews all police reports for accuracy and possible investigative leads. 7. Records progress of investigations and maintains informational files on crimes, crime trends, and potential suspects. Communicates with complainant's or victim's as needed, as to the state of ongoing investigations. 8. Acts as liaison officer to outside bureaus or agencies, to include federal agencies and the Prosecutor's office. Files application for and reviews all search warrants obtained by any officer or unit of the department. 9. Maintains and stores all recovered property; tags and stamps all lost, stolen, or found property including controlled substances that comes into the department's possession. 10. Ensures that all evidence is properly logged, tracked, stored and (if necessary) disposed of or released as ordered by the court. 11. Assists in the preparation of cases for court. Prepares assigned cases for court and charges or responses to charges and procedures. Obtains court disposition of all cases in which he is involved. 12. Operate and maintain our University key and facility access system. |
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) | 1. Associate's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired. 2. At least one year of experience as a Detective, Detective Sergeant, or similar position Certification through M.C.O.L.E.S. 3. Proof of U.S. citizenship. 4. Valid driver's license. |
Required Experience (minimum requirements) | 1. Excellent computer skills and ability to work across multiple platforms 2. Experience using features of spreadsheets, such as formatting, creating and editing formulas, and moving columns and rows. 3. Ability to read police/investigative reports and provide feedback in reference to grammar, accuracy, and 4. Experience using intermediate features of word processing applications such as utilizing columns or tables and sorting Superior communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills . 5. Experience writing search warrants, subpoenas, and letters of preservation |
Desirable Education and/or Experience | |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements) | - Knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies of the department, especially relating to search and seizure, civil process, serving papers, pursuit, and arrest.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities | 1. Advanced Investigative Training. 2. Working knowledge of locks, keys and locking mechanisms. Basic Evidence Training. 3. Basic Evidence Photography Training. 4. Any other investigative training, experience, or related skills. |
