LMU's Loyola Law School invites applications for a full-time Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of the Transactional Lawyering Institute (TLI), a non-tenure track clinical faculty position. TLI was formed to further develop and enhance Loyola's transactional business law curriculum, which integrates theory and practice to best prepare law students for the types of projects and challenges they will confront as lawyers in the first year of a transactional practice. For more information on this innovative curricular program for students who intend to practice business law as transactional lawyers, please visit its website at http://www.lls.edu/tli/.
This academic and administrative position includes the following responsibilities:
- Teach two sections of Business Planning, the capstone course of the Transactional Lawyering Institute;
- Join Professor Therese Maynard as co-author on the next edition of the casebook, Business Planning: Financing the Start-Up Business and Venture Capital Financing, which is currently in its 4th edition and published by Aspen Publishers. For more information, visit here;
- Recruit, train, supervise, evaluate and mentor experienced lawyers who will teach additional sections of Business Planning as adjunct faculty;
- Engage in outreach to students (both current and prospective) as well as law firms and other prospective employers to promote the Transactional Lawyering Institute;
- Maintain and expand the Transactional Lawyering Institute website;
- Collaborate with LLS faculty who teach business law-related subjects to expand opportunities for students to enroll in classes that offer experiential learning by creating new courses that use a simulated deal format;
- Serve as faculty advisor to the Business Law Fellows;
- Serve as faculty advisor to students interested in (or participating in) the Corporate Concentration or Entrepreneurship Concentration;
- Coach, supervise and coordinate the Transactional Negotiation Team ("TNT"), which is Loyola's intramural transactional moot program; and
- Draft Transactional Lawyering Institute Newsletter to be distributed/published twice a year.
Requisite Qualifications:
Applicants are expected to have a distinguished academic background, including a J.D. from an accredited law school, and to have practiced corporate transactional law at a sophisticated level for a minimum of six years and preferably eight to ten years, with extensive experience in venture capital financing transactions, equity incentive arrangements, and mergers and acquisitions, and preferably strong familiarity with both California and Delaware law. A significant element of the student experience in enrolling in courses offered in the Transactional Lawyering Institute is the opportunity that such classes provide for law students to receive detailed and highly-individualized feedback from the professor on their written work product in a manner that is consistent with what an experienced supervising attorney would provide to junior associates. As a result, extensive experience in supervising and managing junior transactional attorneys is an important aspect of an outstanding candidate's background, as well as the demonstrated ability to offer professional development guidance to junior associates. Candidates who are licensed to practice law in California are strongly preferred. Given the administrative responsibilities associated with the position of Director of the Transactional Lawyering Institute, meaningful administrative or managerial experience is also preferred.
Application Process:
To apply for the position, applicants are requested to submit a cover letter including a description of their experience and qualifications, as well as a resume and a list of three professional references who can comment on the applicant's experience and ability to meet the requirements of this position. Applicants are encouraged to include in their cover letter a statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion, which might include: research, teaching, and/or service that has prepared the candidate to contribute to the engagement and inclusion of diverse audiences in higher education, contributions to diverse perspectives and ways of knowing and learning, and/or research or professional experience with a specific focus on underserved communities or nations.
Hiring salary range: $125,000.00-$140,000.00. The salary of the candidate selected for this position will be determined based on a range of factors, including but not limited to, the candidate's education, training, and experience. Salary is one component of LMU's total compensation and comprehensive benefits package.
Only those applicants selected for interviews will be contacted. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled, with priority given to applications submitted by September 1, 2023.
