Under the direction of the Pathology Support Services Manager, assists with the daily administrative, accessioning, and office duties in the Division of Surgical Pathology Consultation Office; receives and logs non-OSU pathology cases (slides, paraffin tissue blocks, outside pathology report) for 2nd opinion diagnosis; ensures receipt of written documentation for consultation from the ordering physician; ensures receipt of patient's 3rd party payer information for accuracy in billing; uses IHIS to register patients and order a consultation case; assists the pathologist when indicated by ordering additional special stains, IHC stains, molecular pathology and specialty testing associated with the 2nd opinion; organizes consult slides, blocks and accompanying paperwork; maintains quality assurance spreadsheets; operates computer equipment to produce complex and confidential medical reports, correspondence and documents; answers phones and responds to inquiries from department and medical center staff, pathologists, clinicians, physicians, researchers and attorneys; researches, compiles and analyzes materials; produces mailings for patient consultation reports; returns outside blocks and slides periodically and according to retention policies; works closely with OSU medical center personnel to ensure timely communications to complete accessioning process for patients scheduled for OSU medical center appointments; works closely with pathology core facility staff to ensure accurate accessioning of molecular pathology cases; directs student employees to provide assistance with office tasks and frequent delivery of case to/from the pathologists or to/from the histology lab.

Answers phones and responds to inquiries from department and medical center staff, pathologists, clinicians, physicians, office staff, nurses, coordinators, researchers, attorneys as well as patients and/or patient family members; researches, complies and analyzes materials; produces mailings for patient consultation reports and loaned material(s) and ensures proper return of materials to correct facility by packing, labeling and documenting of materials returned; contacts outside facilities to request additional information, demographics/insurance, reports, block/slides, etc. as needed; maintains slides, paraffin tissue blocks in conjunction with histology lab and paperwork in an organized manner to allow ease of access; operates computer equipment to produce complex and confidential medical reports, correspondence and documents; directs student employees to provide assistance with office tasks and frequent delivery of cases to/from the pathologists or to/from the histology lab.
Generates accession numbers for Molecular Pathology (MP) testing cases and orders requested stains and distributes MP accessioned numbers to correct staff/departments upon completion; receives requests for patient surgical blocks and/or slides and processes requests for Archives/Clinical Trials per Consultation Office SOP; processes paperwork for Technical Only Stains to ensure prompt testing and accurate billing for tests performed; manages stain request process for Consults which entails: receives stain requests via telephone, email or stain sheet request form; gathers patient demographic information from IHIS as well as entering and ordering stain requests in IHIS and then forwarding request to Clinical Histology Laboratory to complete stain process.

Minimum Education Required High School diploma or GED. Certification or vocational training may be required. Associate degree in relevant field may be preferred. 2 years of relevant experience required. 4-6 years of relevant experience preferred.
