Job Summary

The Harvard Religious Freedom Clinic is seeking an experienced attorney to join its legal practice and teaching program dedicated to teaching professional values and skills to students through the lens of high-quality, pro bono religious-freedom lawyering.

The clinical instructor will report to and support the Director in litigating, supervising, and teaching students in and through legal work on behalf of minority faiths, the vulnerable, and those who serve or support them. This typically includes helping the imprisoned, victims of discrimination in the workplace, and those facing obstacles in ministering to migrants and the poor. Clinic matters may include federal and state litigation, legal consultation, transactional work, representation of clients before agencies, and amicus brief work. In carrying out this work, the Clinic often joins with co-counsel to take advantage of regional or substantive legal expertise.

Position Description

As a Clinical Instructor you will:

• Help manage a portfolio of Clinic cases and represent clients in ongoing cases;

• Help train and teach students enrolled in the Clinic using the tools of clinical pedagogy;

• Meet regularly with student teams to prepare and strategize in their casework, actively supervise and provide thorough feedback to students on client interactions and work product, and help instruct and evaluate students on legal and professional skills;

• Assist as needed with developing and teaching the Clinic's classroom component;

• Assist in managing the administration of the Clinic's practice and operation; and

• Help develop Clinic clients and projects, relying on the expertise and network you bring to the role as well as the Clinic's current and ongoing projects and relationships.

Basic Qualifications

J.D. earned at least three years ago along with 3 or more years of relevant experience and admission to a state bar, with a commitment to join or seek temporary admission to the Massachusetts bar (pursuant to Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:04) or federal bars as needed and if not already admitted.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

• At least three years of litigation experience;

• A passion for the Clinic's mission of ensuring religious freedom for all;

• Experience with teaching, mentoring, and motivating students and beginning attorneys;

• Experience working sensitively with a diverse population of clients, students, and staff;

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team;

• Top academic credentials and superior writing and verbal skills; and

• A commitment to public-interest lawyering and clinical teaching.

Additional Information

This is a term appointment currently expected to extend through 6/30/25, with potential for renewal subject to funding and departmental need.
