Carnegie Mellon University's Center for Technology and Enterprise Creation (CTTEC) is responsible for facilitating and accelerating the movement of research and technology out of the university and into the marketplace. CTTEC is searching for a Manager of Business Development & Licensing. This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who thrives in an exciting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing critical support on specific activities and/or projects such as the evaluation of invention disclosures, negotiation of intellectual property agreements, coordinating the protection of intellectual property, and developing business cases for spin-off companies.
Your core responsibilities will include:
- Perform invention evaluation, including compilation of sufficient background information on technology, potential markets, and licensee candidates to support sound university decision-making on the business case for investment in intellectual property protection and licensing; seeking the advice of appropriate experts both inside and outside the university; and present concepts for review to advisory review panels.
- Develop and negotiate the terms and details of assigned license agreements and coordinate legal review of proposed agreements.
- Develop and negotiate non-disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, inter-institutional agreements, evaluation agreements, assignment agreements and other agreements as needed/related to the above.
- Lead interactions and communication, and assist in acquiring vital authorization from patent attorneys
- Participate in meetings with inventors and/or patent attorneys;
- Draft provisional patent applications, as needed.
- In collaboration with the Director or Associate Director develop business cases for emerging spin-off companies, including market research activities, business plan development and financial modeling, as needed.
- Create and deliver presentations on topics related to technology commercialization and new business formation.
- Maintain productive relationships with all campus and external organizations that play a role in technology transfer and enterprise creation.
- Pursue appropriate continuing education opportunities.
- Propose new or revised operating procedures that can improve workflow or process performance.
- Other duties as assigned

You should demonstrate:
- Familiarity with and ability to manage intellectual property
- Strong understanding of legal documents and contracts, with ability to negotiate and contribute to contracts
- Ability to manage and review invention disclosures
- Impeccable time management skills to balance multiple projects simultaneously
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or science; or equivalent combination of training and experience required
- First-hand experience with patenting and other methods of intellectual property protection preferred
- At least 3 years' experience either in business development, finance, or research in a technology company, intellectual property law, or technology transfer at a university.
- Working knowledge of patents, copyrights and other forms of intellectual property
