Summary Position Elon University is seeking a Senior Director of Planned Giving. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive planned giving program to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward the support of donors who have an interest in supporting Elon through any area of planned giving, such as bequests, annuities, trusts, property transactions, life insurance, and other deferred giving vehicles. The successful candidate will report to the Associate Vice President and will join a team of major and planned giving professionals.

Education Requirements Bachelors degree required, law degree preferred.

Special Skills or Experience Prior knowledge of tax laws and deferred charitable giving vehicles. Previous experience in financial planning or trust/estate administration also a plus.

General Purpose of Position The Senior Director of Planned Giving will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive planned giving program to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors who have an interest in supporting Elon through planned gifts. Work with Donor Relations to steward planned giving donors Utilize planned giving software to create proposals and calculate gift values Work specifically with Reunion classes to emphasize the value of planned gifts Maintain precise database records to ensure accurate gift reporting -Provide planned giving information and support to major and principal gift fundraisers, including joint visits -Present planned giving information to specific audiences such as the Board of Trustees, the Elon Alumni Board, Athletics and various Advisory Boards -Work with Deans, faculty and staff as needed to present planned giving information -Coordinate with the Office of Business, Finance and Technology to appropriately manage gifts of securities and real and personal property -Team with the Accounting Office to report on life income gifts, life insurance gifts and endowment information -Cultivate and maintain relationships with financial advisors, legal professionals and accountants -Attend national and statewide educational conferences and classes to ensure best practices are being implemented, tax information is current and investment trends are recognized
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President, the Senior Director of Planned Giving: Coordinates the planned giving program and assists with the overall fund-raising efforts of the University. Builds and maintains a list of qualified prospects, and maintains pertinent information on those prospects, including a record of personal contacts with those prospects. Organizes and implements a marketing programs for planned giving, including, but not limited to the Magazine of Elon, and a planned giving newsletter. Assists prospective donors and their advisors in identifying donor objectives and designing appropriate giving plans, in coordination with the planned giving agreements. Records and reports on planned giving program results and expectancies for the semi-annual trustee board meetings and on a fiscal year basis. Maintains an up-to-date, detailed listed of all donors who have included Elon in their estate plans. In conjunction with the Associate Vice President, this position will develop annual goals and objectives focused primarily on visits with planned giving prospects and submitted proposals, among other things. Plans, schedules, and coordinates group meetings for professionals, including attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors who are interested in the University. Plans and conducts financial and real estate seminars for groups both on and off campus. Coordinates efforts with the coordinator of reunion giving to market gift planning opportunities to the Golden Alumni class (50th reunion) among others. Maintains accurate records and corresponding documents for all deferred gifts, including but not limited to bequests, gift annuities, trusts, life insurance, and life-estate gifts. Serves as liaison with executors and trustees during the settlement of estates where Elon University is a beneficiary and oversees the settlement process on behalf of the University. Establishes endowment funds and assists other staff members in the creation of the such funds within guidelines and policies. Conducts at least one event each year for recognition of members of the Order of the Oak (Planned giving donors). Other duties as assigned.
