The City Attorney represents the City of Brownsville in all legal matters. Responsibilities include providing legal advice, managing litigation, reviewing contracts, and preparing ordinances and resolutions. Additional duties include researching and formulating long range goals for the City Attorney’s office, developing policy and position papers and communicating with elected officials.

KEY FUNCTIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Provides legal advice to elected and appointed officials.
Manages and monitors the litigation process.
Reviews laws, contracts, civil rights, real estate documents, administrative processes, and other legal issues to develop legal strategies.
Develops briefs, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, charter revisions and other legal documents on behalf of the City.
Prepares cases by gathering information, interviewing witnesses, examining evidence, and applying legal argument.
Attends City Commission meetings and other board meetings.
Performs related tasks as necessary.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
Requires minimum of four years of work related experience and municipal legal experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation electronic office machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
