The South Carolina Bar (the “SCB” ”) is a vibrant organization dedicated to serving the legal profession and the public interest, furthering public understanding of the law and the legal system, promoting access to justice, and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the South Carolina legal community. Established by the South Carolina Supreme Court, the SCB's mission is to serve its nearly 18,000 members, three-quarters of whom live in South Carolina, through collaboration, the sharing of information, and by providing quality education to improve South Carolina’s legal profession and the administration of justice. This includes continuing legal education, practice management, and wellness programming.
The SCB is organized as a 501(c)(6) corporation with an annual budget of more than $5 million, funded primarily through license fees set by the Supreme Court. In addition, the SCB’s CLE Division has a separate annual budget of approximately $2.6 million. The SCB currently employs 57 staff members, 47 of whom are full-time.
A 20-member Board of Governors governs the SCB. The 198-member House of Delegates is the SCB’s policy-making body. There are 30 standing committees and workgroups, 19 substantive and practice-related sections, and two divisions.
The executive director is accountable to the Board of Governors.
Position Summary
The executive director is the chief staff executive officer and is responsible for staff leadership and management of the SCB, including development and implementation of the strategic plan, oversight of day-to-day programs and operations,and cultivating strong relationships with the SCB’s strategic partners, including the Supreme Court, the state legislature, and the South Carolina Bar Foundation. The executive director facilitates a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and innovation throughout the organization.
Key Duties
Advise and support the Board of Governors regarding strategic opportunities, challenges, and threats
Build the governing capacity of the Board of Governors, House of Delegates, committees, and sections through policies and best practices
Collaborate with the president and other officers to assist them in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities
Develop operational goals and objectives congruent with the strategic plan and the budget
Ensure compliance with Supreme Court Rules
Cultivate and maintain relationships with the Supreme Court and appropriate legislative and executive branch leaders to further the SCB’s mission
Advance programming and services that support members’ professional development and wellbeing and promote the profession
Advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the organization and the profession
Exercise sound financial management and oversight in compliance with best practices and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations
Foster a high-functioning, dynamic, inclusive, and collaborative staff and volunteer culture
Oversee sound risk management policies and processes, including cybersecurity
Optimize the use of technology to serve staff, members, and the public interest
Assure adequate resources, training, and support to retain and develop staff
Communicate regularly with internal and external stakeholders
Oversee management and maintenance of the SCB headquarters and Conference Center

Experience
Experience as the chief staff executive or in a senior management position with a non-profit association, foundation, government agency, or law-related organization is preferred.
Education & Qualifications
A law degree and a license in good standing to practice law.
