Position Summary:
The Development, Disorder, and Delinquency Laboratory, housed within the School of Social Ecology and under the advisement of Elizabeth Cauffman, Ph.D., at the University of California, Irvine is currently accepting applications for a Licensed Therapist as part of the Young Adult Clinical Programming. The primary focus will be serving the participants in the Young Adult Court (YAC) of Orange County, which was founded in response to the misalignment between developmental research and the application of criminal justice policies for transitional-aged youths (18-25 years old). The YAC is a collaboration between the Defense Attorney, the District Attorney, Probation Officers, the Judge, the Orangewood Foundation, the Community Action Partnership of Orange County, the Orange County Health Care Agency, and the University of California, Irvine.) Hours may include evenings and Saturdays to accommodate client work/school schedules. Of note, the Center will provide pro-bono services facilitated by county grant funding and we will therefore not be billing clients nor insurance providers. Under the general direction of the Mental Health Center's Clinical Director, the Licensed Therapist's primary role will be providing individualized and group therapy and care to the young men enrolled in the YAC. The Licensed Therapist will counsel clients across a range of health, academic, developmental, psychological, cultural and social concerns; provide assessment, crisis intervention, brief therapy, case management and develop prevention and programming to promote optimal health for the YAC men and the community. Predominant clinical concern areas for our population include trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance use problems contributing to antisocial behaviors and attitudes. Caseloads are expected to be moderate (<15 clients) with no minimal requirement for hours/caseload. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

One (1) year of post-license clinical experience, preferably working with young adults (18-25), trauma-impacted youth and families in community mental health settings, and/or justice-impacted populations in community or correctional settings.
Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or associated mental health field.
Licensed as a Clinical Social Worker, Psychologist, Marriage and Family Therapist, or other therapist in California.
Thorough knowledge associated with providing evaluation, diagnosis and psychotherapy services, with particular emphasis in trauma and substance use disorders in adolescents and young adults and associated training/certification in evidence-based interventions (e.g., Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; Seeking Safety; Motivational Interviewing for Substance Abuse). Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse client group Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, methods, procedures, and standards. Broad understanding and utilization of evidence-based approaches to clinical care. Thorough knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to patients' rights. Highly effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Highly effective verbal and written communication and excellent interpersonal skills. Knowledge of business software and specialized applications / systems used in behavioral health settings. Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, sound judgement, and maintain strict confidentiality. Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic approach and modify as necessary. Ability to develop and present educational programs and / or workshops.
Preferred:
Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish. Supervision experience with psychology students or interns, preferably in an APA accredited program. Expertise in utilization of clinical outcomes and progress tracking and creative and non-traditional methods of engagement for challenging client populations. Familiarity of clinical and community-based resources in Southern California and Orange County targeting high-risk youth populations. Experience working independently and collaboratively with interdisciplinary treatment teams (e.g., clinical, health, case managers, criminal justice, and/or research staff).
