Learn more about the UC Office of the PresidentDEPARTMENT OVERVIEWAs part of UC Legal - OGC, the Legal Practice Support team delivers ethical, timely, efficient and high quality legal services to the University of California's ten campuses, five medical centers, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as well as to the Board of Regents, the President, the Chancellors and other officers of the University.
POSITION SUMMARYThis position provides paralegal support in the areas of planned giving and estate/trust/gift administration in matters where the University, ten campuses, five medical centers, are named as a beneficiary of the donor(s) will or trusts, and provide support to other UC Legal staff. Exhibits a strong foundation of knowledge in the overall paralegal field with some specialized experience in trusts and estates. Capable of performing duties independently, this paralegal must excel in reviewing, monitoring and administering hundreds of trust, estate, and gift matters with a focus on attention to detail and effective time management. Conducts research on projects as directed by attorneys.
A UC Legal paralegal acts as a liaison with internal clients, outside counsel and external organizations and may manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. Must be able to thrive in a collaborative work environment while also functioning with autonomy.

Responsibilities50% Research and Writing
- Research various estate and trust matters, including complex tax issues, legal issues and issues related to bequests and gifts.
- Research, draft and review memoranda regarding allocation and reallocation of Regents' gifts and fund terms to ensure conformity to University-wide policy and procedures.
- Analyze and interpret legal documents, including wills, trusts, probate accountings and various petitions, to determine complete and accurate handling of each individual matter and prepare analyses of complex planned giving and estate/trust/gift administration documents and present policy issues for review by counsel and campus personnel.
- Advise campuses and OP staff of pertinent issues.
- Prepare responses to documents and correspondence received by personal representatives, donors and their advisors.
50% Financial Analysis and Reporting
- Monitor status of estates and trusts and recommend actions to recover amounts due.
- Review and prepare fiduciary accountings, and complete documentation to claim assets where the University is a designated beneficiary under retirement accounts and other assets.
- Track and coordinate all distributions received.
- Disseminate information relating to distributions and matter status to appropriate UC personnel and other administrators.
Required Qualifications - Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience.
- Knowledge of common computer application programs.
- Strong analytical / problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff; both verbally and in writing.
- Strong project management and data organization skills.
- Strong skills in research and analyzing / synthesizing large amounts of data.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications - Working knowledge of UC processes, protocols and procedures. In-depth knowledge in one or more legal practice areas.
Education - Bachelor's degree OR Associate degree and Paralegal Certificate
License/Certifications - Paralegal Certificate preferred
SPECIAL CONDITIONS - This position is eligible for remote work.
SALARY AND BENEFITSSalary: $42.62 - $48.85/hour, commensurate with experience
