The Associate General Counsel for Employment Law is a member of the Office of General Counsel/Law Department reporting directly to the Institute???s Senior Vice President and General Counsel.?? The Associate General Counsel for Employment Law provides legal advice and representation to the Institute, its executives, investigators, physicians, employees and the Board of Trustees on a broad range of legal matters arising in connection with labor and employment relations. The Associate General Counsel for Employment Law serves as primary counsel to the Chief People Officer and Human Resources department staff.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Associate General Counsel for Employment Law will concentrate efforts on Human Resources matters, including advising Human Resources staff, investigating employee complaints and other employee relations?? matters, selecting and managing outside counsel to represent the Institute before administrative agencies such as the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, representing the Institute in grievance proceedings under collective bargaining agreements, advising Institute staff on compliance with labor and employment laws including the development and revision of employment-related policies and procedures, and supporting Human Resources with offer letters, severance agreements and other employment-related agreements.??
The Associate General Counsel for Employment Law may handle other matters in the Office of General Counsel from time to time, including:
- Immigration law.
- Benefits
- Executive compensation.
- Medical staff matters.
- Risk management advice.
- Contract review, drafting and negotiation.
- Counsel to Trustee and Institute (management) committees.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: ??????????????????????
- Supervises junior attorneys and support staff.
PATIENT CONTACT: ??????????
- Works throughout the Institute and partner hospitals in a variety of settings with possible exposure to infectious disease through airborne transmission.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Strong knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations, strong understanding of the Institute???s activities and mission and the health care, academic and research contexts in which the Institute operates, and be able to understand, articulate and manage the interaction between business risk and legal risk.
- Significant experience counseling clients in employment law matters. Familiarity with nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations engaged in academic, research and patient care operations strongly preferred.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
- Strong client service ethic and professionalism.
- Strongly skilled at drafting for legal filings, correspondence, employment-related contracts and other documents.
- Presentation skills and experience.
- Ability to Work independently, Attention to detail, discretion, diplomacy and exercises significant judgment.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education:
- Juris Doctor from accredited law school required.
Minimum Experience:
- 8 or more years of relevant legal experience required, with a concentration in employment law, preferably in a law firm or corporate legal department setting.??
- Significant experience counseling clients in employment law matters.??
- Familiarity with nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations engaged in academic, research and patient care operations strongly preferred.
Certification/License/Registration:
- Massachusetts bar membership required.
