Legal Assistant Job Announcement
The Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance seeks a Legal Assistant for its Perinatal Legal Assistance and Well-being Project (P-LAW), which provides legal services to pregnant and postpartum patients receiving care at Medstar Washington Hospital Center's Division of Women's and Infants' Services.
The Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance (HJA) is a medical-legal partnership (MLP) between Georgetown Law Center and Georgetown University Medical Center that includes a range of interprofessional education, service, and research initiatives designed to address disparities faced by DC communities underserved by health and justice systems. Our clients are individuals and families, predominantly of color, in need of legal assistance in areas ranging from housing and domestic violence law to public benefits and employment law.
The Legal Assistant will report to the MLP Director of the P-LAW Project, and will join an interdisciplinary team of law and medical faculty, healthcare providers, staff, students and community partners. The Legal Assistant's responsibilities will include:
- Receiving and triaging all referrals to the Perinatal LAW Project, including communicating with referring health care providers and staff, obtaining relevant referral information and documents, and managing referral records in cloud-based case management system
- Serving as the initial point of contact for patients referred to P-LAW and scheduling and conducting in-depth intake interviews by telephone and/or in-person
- Assisting with client case development under the direction of the project attorney, including obtaining documents from clients, assisting with applications and paperwork related to the client's legal case, assisting the attorney with investigating case merit, and organizing client files.
- Creating intake, self-help, and outreach materials
- Providing general administrative support to the Perinatal LAW Project team
Qualifications: - A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, 5 years of relevant work experience will be considered.
- A demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice, and a passion for assisting others
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to maintain records and information in an accurate, timely, and confidential manner
- Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments
- Strong interpersonal skills and highly effective written and oral communication skills, particularly telephonic communication
- Willingness to take initiative in managing projects
- Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a diverse team of colleagues, clients, and staff at partner organizations
- Strong computer skills including Google Docs, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Familiarity with legal and/or social services systems through lived and/or prior professional experience preferred
Compensation: This position is a contract position, with the option for a full or part-time schedule. The selected candidate will be hired via Georgetown University's contingent employment services vendor, NextSource. Candidates are eligible for benefits through NextSource after 60 days of employment. The annualized salary for a full-time Legal Assistant begins at $45,000. A part-time Legal Assistant will be paid an equivalent hourly rate starting at $21.63.
Work Mode: The Legal Assistant will be based out of HJA's office at 500 First St. NW, but may also require on-site presence at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Currently, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, work is being done based on a hybrid remote schedule and it is possible that the individual hired may start their employment working remotely.
