The Director of Human Resources is charged with supporting, developing and implementing human resources strategies and initiatives consistent with Brunswick School’s mission, values, and initiatives. The Director of Human Resources will guide, facilitate, and manage employment-related services, including hiring, onboarding, retention, evaluation, termination, personnel records, legal compliance, and compensation.
The Director of Human Resources should possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and be able to balance multiple priorities. This individual should approach their work with a genuine empathy and awareness of the needs and sensitivities of individuals within the school community. This position should also take the lead in continuing to foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and compassion in service toward building a supportive environment for all faculty and staff.
Essential Duties
- Uphold the mission and values of Brunswick School and demonstrate a commitment to preparing boys for lives marked by excellence in their endeavors, ethics in their actions, and empathy toward others.
- Assess, recommend, and collaborate to design and implement human resources policies and procedures related to employee relations, benefits, and health and wellbeing.
- Oversee Brunswick’s compliance with all existing reporting requirements.
- Prepare necessary information requested or required for compliance with laws and serve as the initial contact with the school's employment attorney and outside government agencies.
- Manage the annual review of the Employee Handbook and all associated faculty-related policies.
- Ensure compliance with background checks, verification of credentials (education, professional licenses, and certifications), reference checks, etc. for new hires.
- Manage annual employment contracts with teachers and staff.
- In collaboration with senior administrators, manage employee evaluation systems
- Facilitate employee issues/conflict resolution including grievances, demands, separations, accommodations, and leaves of absence.
- In collaboration with senior administrators, manage the overall staffing process, including alignment of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding processes with Brunswick’s goals and initiatives.
- Ensure job descriptions are up-to-date and in compliance with Department of Labor classifications and all local, state, and federal regulations.
- Work with the head of school and other senior administrators on compensation matters, including salary, faculty housing assignments, and tuition remission.
- Maintain all human resource-related files and records.
- Responsible for compiling and maintaining data related to employment. Responsible for ongoing submission of all relevant data toward benchmarking surveys, including annual DASL submission.
- Administer employee training as needed, including harassment and discrimination training.
- Serve a resource to administrators on human resource related topics. Support professional development initiatives through providing training or educational resources.
- Supervise the Payroll and Benefits Manager.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- A bachelor’s degree, preferably in human resources or employment law. (Master degree and/or human resources certifications highly preferred).
- At least five years of experience in progressively responsible human resources roles with educational administration.
- Working technical knowledge of human resources principles, procedures, and practices
- Proficient knowledge of local, state, and federal labor laws and relevant regulations to ensure compliance.
- Experience in performance management, communication processes, compensation, wage structure, and benefits administration.
- Deep appreciation and passion for education, particularly in an independent boy’s school environment.
- An ability to build trust, respect, and credibility with senior leaders, trustees, faculty, and staff, serving as a valued colleague and resource.
- Ability to guarantee absolute confidentiality, security, and integrity of employee and sensitive information.
- An informed citizen who models cultural competency, values diversity and equity, and demonstrates a commitment to the cultivation of an inclusive and multicultural community.
- Strong communication skills in person, in writing, by phone, and through other electronic means (eg. video-conferencing).
- Strong collaboration skills to ensure effective coordination between the operational departments and other areas of the school.
- Working knowledge of business and human resources software with an ability to learn new systems and software.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex organization structure.
- Demonstrate individual initiative, self-awareness, commitment to personal and professional growth, ability to receive and apply feedback, and the ability to advance multiple strategic and operational priorities simultaneously
Physical Requirements and Work Environment - Work at two distinct campuses in Greenwich, CT on a regular basis and periodically at the School’s Vermont campus.
- Works in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 20lbs.
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office setting
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
