The Birnbaum Women's Leadership Network at NYU School of Law (the "BWLN") is seeking an Executive Director to lead the BWLN together with faculty director Melissa Murray, and to work with the faculty director and BWLN staff on all aspects of the BWLN's programming, research, and strategy.
Through leadership training, research, and initiatives to advance workplace equity, the BWLN develops New York University School of Law students' leadership skills, supports the Law School as an environment that nurtures gender equity and women's achievement, and engages the legal profession to better enable women lawyers to thrive in law school and in their chosen careers.
The BWLN builds on NYU Law's long history at the forefront of women's entry into the law. This historical commitment to gender equity in the law has seeded the profession with NYU Law-educated attorneys, who have shattered glass ceilings. There has been great progress in women's representation in the law in recent decades. But there remains significant work to do. The Birnbaum Women's Leadership Network was conceived in 2017 in part to meet this need.
Key Responsibilities:
The Executive Director will be responsible for working closely with the faculty director, BWLN staff, founding supporters, and other stakeholders to advance the BWLN's mission. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Representing the BWLN to internal and external stakeholders;
- Overseeing and continuing to develop the Women's Leadership Fellows Program;
- Serving as a key thought leader on issues of leadership development at NYU Law;
- Creating leadership training programming for the Law School community and alums;
- Partnering with the faculty director to create and execute strategy for law firm and legal employer engagement;
- Developing and organizing BWLN events programming;
- Leading BWLN-sponsored events, including symposia and conferences, networking receptions, and leadership skills-training sessions;
- Developing communications and branding strategies and materials;
- Developing a strategy for engaging national and local media;
- Hiring and supervising personnel, including consultants and student research assistants, as appropriate;
- Overseeing fundraising and budgeting, in collaboration with relevant Law School departments;
- Serving as a liaison and point of contact within the Law School and University, including for other internal research centers; and
- Cultivating and nurturing collaborations with individuals and institutions outside the University.
The Executive Director must possess strong leadership skills and work well with others. A history of developing powerful collaborations within and across organizations is strongly desired. Interests in academic publication and policymaking also are desirable. A successful candidate will possess:
- A J.D. or comparable graduate or professional degree, with a minimum of 6 years of work experience in the legal profession, legal education, or other areas of higher education;
- Experience leading an organization;
- Expertise in leadership training;
- Strong interest in and demonstrable experience in gender equity and/or women's rights;
- Strong organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills;
- Commitment to collegiality and collaboration; and
- Strong team-building and management skills.
