The Office of General Counsel provides legal representation and advice to Cornell University on a broad range of legal issues including business transactions, compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, government grants and contracts, litigation, labor and employment, faculty and student issues, privacy, intellectual property, technology transfer, information technology law, safety and environmental law, health law, real estate, international issues, non-profit and tax matters. The office actively represents the university in litigation and before regulatory agencies, as well as advising on legal exposures and engaging in preventive lawyering, including delivery of educational programs. All attorneys are expected to collaborate effectively to address the legal needs of Cornell University. The Office of General Counsel has fourteen attorneys located in Ithaca, NY and six attorneys who serve the needs of Weill Cornell Medicine in NYC. This new position is within the general counsel (non-litigation) practice of the office, though all attorneys collaborate in both advising and litigation support, as needed. Specific Position Responsibilities: This individual will have primary responsibility for supporting the legal needs of eCornell/External Education, a unit under the academic leadership of the Office of the Provost which provides external educational programs in person and through its online platform. eCornell is a major growing educational unit of the university delivering educational programs both in the US and globally. The role will involve extensive engagement with the business and leadership team at eCornell, with a focus on eCornell's transactional and business needs. Sophistication in reviewing, drafting and negotiating a wide variety of agreements central to eCornell's operations, and assisting clients to assess the balance of business objectives and legal risk. Broad expertise in corporate transactions, both domestic and international, is highly desirable as well as familiarity with licensing and intellectual property issues. The position will also involve collaboration with other attorneys in the Office of General Counsel to support compliance, privacy/data security, and employment law needs of eCornell and may include projects outside of eCornell as assigned by the General Counsel. Required Qualifications: The new position will be filled at the assistant or associate general counsel level, depending on experience. J.D. or L.L.B. degree required. The individual must be a member of, or able to obtain prompt reciprocal admission to, the New York State Bar. Candidates being considered for the Asst. University Counsel position must have a minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant work experience; candidates being considered for the Assoc. University Counsel position must have at least 7 years of relevant work experience.
This position does not require locating to Ithaca, although candidates who are in the region or interested in moving to the Ithaca area are preferred. The successful candidate who does not reside in the Ithaca area will be required to travel to Cornell on a regular basis to engage in person with eCornell clients and the team in the Office of General Counsel.
