The Legal Advocacy Diversity Coordinator provides support, information, and academic and legal/court advocacy to victim/survivors/concerned persons of sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking and harassment for the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and Augsburg University with a focus on providing awareness and victim services to underserved/marginalized communities on campus. This includes providing crisis counseling, resources, referrals, and support to students, staff, faculty and visitors of The Aurora Center. The Legal Advocacy Diversity Coordinator also writes protective orders, assists clients through police, medical, criminal justice, and university systems, facilitates support groups, and oversees direct service advocate volunteers.
Detailed job responsibilities (include, but are not limited to, the following): Advocacy: (55%) â— Answer helpline/business line and provide services to walk-in clients during office hours â— Provide advocacy for clients through systems including but not limited to academic, housing, police, hospital/medical, legal, and University processes â— Provide cultural and identity specific (i.e. disability, ethnicity, gender identity, race, sexuality) outreach, office hours, advocacy, crisis counseling, referrals, and resources to underserved/marginalized communities â— Collaborate with campus offices and service that serve underserved/marginalized communities (i.e. Gender & Sexuality Center, Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence, International Student and Scholar Services, Disability Resource Center, student cultural centers, etc.) â— Provide information and referrals about legal, campus, and other community resources â— Assist clients in safety planning, identifying options, and problem-solving â— Provide information and assist clients in filling out, filing, and attending hearings related to restraining orders, family court, criminal court, and legal procedures â— Co-facilitate cultural and identity-specific support groups (survivors of color, LGBTIQ survivors, survivors w/ disabilities) with Student Counseling Services – manage intake process, maintain meeting schedule, and coordinate additional needs for the support group â— Provide high level support, consultation, and training to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, academic departments, medical staff, and law enforcement regarding cultural and identity-specific trauma-informed practices and policy/legal enforcement of sexual misconduct â— Communicate and assist faculty, staff, Title IX investigators, university and community attorneys and law enforcement on the needs concerns, questions, and best practices of working with trauma survivors â— Provide policy and protocol information about legal, university, and community resources â— Provide procedural options and assistance to clients through systems including academic, housing, police, hospital/medical, legal, Office for Community Standards, Equal Opportunity & Affirmative Action, etc. â— Keep supervisor informed of high-risk clients situations â— Participate as 24-hour helpline advocate back-up if needed â— Serve in weekly rotation as professional back-up staff for helpline advocates â— Provide direct service training, client consultation, and case management and functionally supervise helpline or office advocates â— Adhere to agency and university policies, including but not limited to confidentiality and the code of conduct/ethics â— Maintain professional boundaries with agency clients and co-workers
Outreach and Agency Representation: (20%) â— Provide outreach, build relationships, and create innovative direct service solutions for underrepresented/marginalized communities/student cultural organizations impacted by gender-based violence â— Host advocacy office hours in spaces accessible to marginalized communities around campus â— Speak at various meetings, functions, to explain Aurora’s mission and services and recruit new volunteers â— Attend partner agency meetings as assigned to address issues of sexual assault, relationship violence, sexual harassment, and stalking â— Provide professional training to groups such as law enforcement, university hearing panels, and other partner agencies like cultural and identity-specific organizations and services
Administrative: (15%) â— Supervise office advocates and direct service student staff â— Attend annual training and webinars related to victim advocacy and marginalized communities â— Manage, coordinate, schedule, and assist with helpline call center system and technology and helpline advocates â— Provide client case management to advocates, interns, and staff â— Provide on-call orientation to direct service advocates and office orientation to office advocates â— Consult with supervisor at weekly meetings about client concerns, workload management, professional development, and other areas â— Facilitate weekly direct service student staff meetings â— Participate in weekly team meetings about client needs, scheduling, and other team issues â— Attend trainings and continuing education activities as assigned
Record-Keeping and Data Coordination: (10%) â— Maintain, supervise, and input client records into departmental database â— Complete all required service documentation in a thorough and timely manner â— Participate in agency grant and data reporting as directed by supervisor â— Adhere to agency policies and work rules â— Provide statistical reports for Clery Act and other departmental purposes â— Other duties as assigned
