The Portland City Attorney's Office is seeking a Police Advice & Litigation

Deputy City Attorney 

The selected candidate will work as part of a team providing legal services to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) and other public safety bureaus. This position will advise the City’s elected officials and PPB personnel on the legal aspects of 21st century policing. Must have a strong desire to work with police officers and an understanding of the changing legal and societal landscape in which police operate. This position is also expected to provide advice on general municipal law to ensure that PPB successfully carries out its support and administrative functions including but not limited to contracting, public records, tort claims, crowd management, public meetings, internal policies, government ethics, and legislative drafting. This position will be called upon at times to represent the City, PPB and its officers in various aspects of civil litigation, including but not limited to, civil forfeiture, affirmative litigation, property rights, public records, returns of property, civil compromises, subpoenas, and securing specialty warrants or orders. The successful candidate will also have skills to develop and deliver effective training to police officers and to communicate well with community members and organizations. It is a strategic goal of the Portland City Attorney’s Office to advance the City’s objective of achieving equity in all of its programs, services and activities. Candidates should be culturally competent, familiar with equity issues in policing and committed to public service.
