Position description The Legal Specialist is responsible for initiating and producing complex work at a high level of competence in one or more areas of law in support of attorneys and/or clients. Work product is self-directed and requires significant independent judgment and discretion. Advanced knowledge and understanding of practice areas, processes, procedures, rules and regulations is required. The specific duties of the Legal Specialist may vary based on department needs and may include but is not limited to business/corporate/transactional work, health law, employment, litigation and website design, maintenance and management. The Legal Specialist provides leadership and is considered an expert in one or more areas of law, educates and updates clients/departments on specific legal topics and may take the lead on significant projects. The Legal Specialist participates in discussions and analysis of complex matters and provides recommendations with minimal attorney involvement. The majority of the time this position will work remotely, but the candidate does need to live within driving distance of a Mayo Clinic Legal office (Rochester, Scottsdale, Jacksonville, Eau Claire or La Crosse) for essential project work, client meetings and in-person team meetings. Qualifications Qualified candidates will meet one of the following education requirements: a four-year degree and a paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) certified program; a bachelor’s degree from an ABA-approved paralegal educational program; or a J.D. degree. Five years of relevant legal experience required. A J.D. degree may be substituted for required experience. A bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of relevant legal experience, including at least 3 years of senior-level paralegal experience, may be substituted for all previously-noted requirements. License or certification Completion of PACE (Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam), other professional designations (advanced certification in specific practice area), or a Master's degree preferred. Completion of the Mayo Clinic Project Management Course or equivalent preferred. Exemption status: Exempt Compensation Detail: Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $2,861.60, based on a full-time position.
