The University of Washington School of Law’s Trial Advocacy and Moot Court Honor Board (MCHB) programs seek a Temporary Advocacy Fellow. This position will provide support to both programs on a wide range of administrative and project coordination duties designed to support students’ litigation experience. This is an hourly, limited-term position expected to work an average of 15 hours per week for 9 months. The Trial Advocacy Program supports a cohort of courses focused on the litigation process including: Pre-Trial Advocacy, Trial Advocacy 1 and 2, Depositions, and Persuasive Oral Advocacy. The MCHB provides students with a variety of advocacy skills through brief-writing and competition opportunities. In-house competitions give students appellate and trial level litigation experience and national and international competitions give students the opportunity to compete against teams from around the world on a focused area of the law. MCHB provides training and coaching to students and national and international teams work with coaches to develop advocacy skills effectively. While MCHB members are selected through a competitive application process, all UW students may participate in any MCHB competition, earning points towards membership. Job Duties Trial Advocacy program operations: •Maintain regular communication with judges and lawyers who serve as our instructors - includes scheduling information, thank you notes etc. •Serve as interface between law school staff and instructors. This covers a broad range of issues, including scheduling, enrollment and equipment instruction. Assist students with Add/Drop section changes. Prompt Trial Ad 1 and 2 instructors about the weekly grading chore of assigning points to student performances in the small sections. •Manage room changes due to conflicts created by special events and make sure students and faculty are provided timely information. •Schedule in-house mock trials and arrange for trials with students in different sections when the numbers are not even and there are some without partners. Facilitate and manage the King County Courthouse mock trials (equipment and access to building, manage issues that arise during mock trials). •Recruit judges to hear the mock jury trials at the King County Courthouse (KCCH) for Trial Ad 2. •Interface with judicial bailiffs about scheduling issues surrounding the mock trials. •Schedule and coordinate the Hugh Miracle Competition and the Coughenour Competition. Moot Court program operations: •Manage In-House Competitions which includes working with Moot Court Honor Board, faculty advisor, and administration to make sure the competitions run smoothly; trainings for the judges about their role in scoring and feedback, management of the competition itself, and communications with volunteer attorney judges; be available and onsite for all in house competitions to trouble shoot problems; field and help process any student complaints; provide thank you process for judges. •Coordinate national team practices. Assist with preparing students and recruiting outside lawyers to help serve as mock judges. •Ensure students receive appropriate student credit hours by interfacing with Academic Services. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: •Juris Doctor •Trial advocacy experience. •Ability to work with or to learn a variety of software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel. DESIRED: •A strong educational or experiential background. •A demonstrated history of working with diverse clientele.
