Summary of Responsibilities: The Planned Giving Officer serves as primary college solicitor of planned gifts in furthering the mission of the College. The Planned Giving Officer is responsible for strategic leadership and direction of our gift planning effort. Planned giving is a significant component of a comprehensive development program at the College. It compliments other forms of fundraising, especially major gifts solicitation. The main focus of this position will be to develop strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors throughout the giving process.
Essential Responsibilities: (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)
Planned giving activity:
- Responsible for a portfolio of 125-150 planned and major giving prospects and donors annually who are in various stages of identification, prospects cultivated, solicitations, proposals developed and gifts closed through a moves management system, and administering open estates through distribution and closing.
- Secure, schedule, and record visits. Prepares regular reports of major and planned gift activity and results against target to provide basis for assessing success rate.
- Communicate with and keep current the Heritage Society membership.
- Develop and manage a marketing program that promotes bequests, charitable trusts, gift annuities, and other estate planning strategies as they relate to philanthropy. These marketing efforts shall focus on educating and informing College constituents on the opportunities inherent in tax-wise giving.
- Must remain professionally current on state and federal taxes, gift, and estate tax giving methods and the legal aspects of charitable giving techniques. Proven ability to work cooperatively with private wealth advisors, attorneys, CPA’s, etc.
- Serve as a liaison between the College and Cornerstone who is responsible for managing annuity and trust investments and ensuring compliance is current.
- Provide advice on solicitation strategies, especially related to tax and estate planning benefits, to other gift officers. Work closely and collaboratively with other gift officers in the solicitation of planned gifts. Prepare proposals for planned gift prospects.
- Works with the Vice President to develop policies and procedures for the raising, processing, acknowledging, and recognizing major and planned gifts.
- Supports the Director of Donor Services in an effort to maintain the integrity of the database system, and provide appropriate reports, records, and other data as requested.
- Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality, clear communication about and representation of the institution.
- Use and oversee planned giving software. Knowledge and usage of Crescendo is helpful.
- Perform other miscellaneous duties, as assigned.
Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree
Experience: Five or more years of experience showing success in fundraising or planned giving with a proven record of success in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding planned gifts from individuals, preferably with a liberal arts emphasis (transferable experience as a financial planner, trust officer, or estate planning attorney will also be considered if the candidate has previous fundraising experience).
- A clear knowledge and understanding of gift planning methodologies and strategies as part of a comprehensive development program is essential.
- Strong interpersonal skills are necessary as is the ability to clearly communicate gift planning strategies to potential donors.
- Demonstrated experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors and developing strategies.
- Demonstrated successful experience in soliciting, negotiating and closing planned gifts or major gifts of $25,000 or more and building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and relate to professional advisors.
- A commitment to excellent job performance and teamwork is essential as is a record of success in fundraising and willingness to travel and work with potential donors (occasional evening and weekend responsibilities).
- Ability to articulate the mission of a Geneva College and how advancement supports the mission.
- Affirm “The Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” of Geneva College.
- Detail oriented and able to meet deadlines and provide appropriate follow up.
- Confidence in written and verbal communication, including the ability to make compelling presentations to groups and larger public gatherings.
- Demonstrated capacity to organize and manage programs.

- Has knowledge of planned giving instruments and software.
- The ability to work independently and creatively in a collaborative, busy, team-oriented environment.
Christian Commitment: eligible candidates must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to candidates who support and have an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. The individual must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
