The Research and Emerging Technologies Librarian is responsible for providing reference and research services to law school faculty, students, staff, and library card holders. This position places particular emphasis on technology based-services for both research and law office use, and maintains web-based content for the library while spearheading digital initiatives and services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Research and Reference Support (40%)
1. Provides reference services to law school faculty, students and staff as well as attorney patrons; involves working weekend, holiday, and evening hours.
2. Assists in the creation of subject-specific research guides, pathfinders, and library user guides.
3. Serves as a Library Liaison for assigned faculty members; assisting faculty with online/electronic research, inter-library loans and other research as needed, maintains bibliographies of faculty materials.
4. Assists in the online promotion of faculty scholarship, student symposia, and student journals.
5. Conducts library tours as requested.
6. Provides individual bibliographic instruction as required.Teaching and Instruction (20%)
1. Develop and teach a law technology course and if interested advanced legal research courses in rotation with the other research librarians.
2. Create assignments and course development.
3. Evaluate student performance and class effectiveness.
4. Market classes to law students.Technology Based Projects (20%)
1. Develops and maintains the content, styling, and electronic services provided by the law librarys website.
2. Develops computer-based tutorials, screen casts, and presentations for classroom, and online, usage.
3. Maintains the law schools institutional repository; including collecting archival materials, uploading student journals, faculty scholarship, events/symposia, historical materials, and other collections.
4. Develops digital initiatives and Library 2.0 projects.
5. Works extensively with student journal editors; assists in the promotion of online journals, works to increase citation rate and overall journal rankings.
6. Maintains the librarys chat and instant-messaging reference services.Collection Management and Assessment (15%)
1. Identifies new titles for acquisition, based on assigned subject areas.
2. Collects, records, and makes data-driven decisions related to holdings and use of collections within given subject areas.
3. Collaborates with other law librarians to assess usefulness and quality of library collections.
4. Consults with staff in technical services and information services regarding collection problems.Service and Scholarship (5%)
1. Serves on and/or chairs law school, university, and joint library committees, working groups, and task forces.
2. Participation in local, regional, and national professional organizations.
3. Works with local and national service organizations.
4. Conducts research, and produces scholarship, related to legal research; presents at conferences; publishes research and other scholarly materials.GENERAL GUIDELINES1. Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services.
2. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
3. Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services.
4. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.
5. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
6. Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.
7. Prepares and submits reports as requested and required

1. Knowledge of emerging issues and technologies in legal research.
2. Knowledge of scholarly communication issues.
3. Knowledge of information technology tools, including those used in library initiatives and law office technologies.
4. Experience providing in-person and virtual reference services.
5. Knowledge of law school curriculum and resources
6. Knowledge of core legal collections, legal databases, and legal publishers.
7. Knowledge of basic word processing, spreadsheet and email systems.
1. Demonstrated competency in both in-person and virtual reference work, preferably in an academic law library.
2. Demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively, as a team member and independently.
3. Excellent organization and time management skills.
4. Excellent interpersonal, oral, written, and presentation skills for communicating in multiple formats with a wide range of constituencies.

Education and/or Experience:
Education1. MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited program
2. J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.Years of ExperienceTwo years in an academic law library required. Some law firm experience preferred.
