Work closely with alumni and friends of Duke University to explore creative, tax-efficient ways to support the university while accomplishing their other financial and personal goals. Provide gift-planning assistance to development officers in central development and Duke’s schools, colleges and programs on matters concerning deferred and complex gifts by prospects and donors. Collaborate with colleagues across campus to promote planned gifts. The Associate Director of Gift Planning will report to the Assistant Vice President of Gift Planning. Work Performed - Develop and maintain a portfolio of gift planning prospects and donors, serving as a philanthropic planning advisor to them and their other advisors to produce current and deferred planned gifts to benefit the university. Produce or assist with draft documents, calculations, proposals, endowment agreements and other necessary materials as needed by prospects, donors and advisors.
- Serve as Gift Planning Office liaison for a portfolio of “internal clients” consisting of schools, colleges, and programs.
- Develop an understanding of their programs, funding priorities and the broad scope of their activities and provide excellent customer service.
- Actively assist these colleagues in identifying gift planning prospects and promoting gift planning strategies.
- Provide development assistance including technical expertise; endowment and gift agreement advice; educational programing for staff members, boards and prospects; and marketing assistance.
- Promote innovation and creativity in their approach to gift planning fundraising. Serve as Gift Planning Office partner for a similar portfolio of central major gift officers, assisting them in identifying gift planning prospects and drafting explanations, proposals, illustrations and agreements for their work with those prospects.
- Partner with annual fund and major gift colleagues on comprehensive reunion efforts, supporting a volunteer co-chair for one or more reunion classes and acting as the Gift Planning representative for volunteer conference calls and meetings.
- Assist with: planning and conducting stewardship events including those for Duke Heritage Society members; production of gift planning publications in print and web-based formats; and handling probate, gift designation, and tax matters related to realized planned gifts to Duke. Help insure compliance with applicable regulations and university policies.
Candidates should possess the personal skills and professional expertise necessary to work with individual charitable gift prospects and donors, development colleagues, attorneys, accountants, trust officers, fund managers and other tax, insurance and financial professionals. This position requires regular travel locally, regionally and nationally, and participation in occasional evening and weekend activities. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree required. Law, business, finance or other advanced degree or certification preferred. A minimum of seven years in legal, accounting, financial, fund raising or related field required. |
